Stamp Collecting

The Romans loved collecting stamps

Evidence of this has been found

In Eastern Kent since Victoria

But I have little interest in this

As I do not forgive the sea

For all the lives it has taken

Each lost had a brother sister

A mother father or a wife

This is why I will never forgive you

Ships were lost on the sands

In storms and in collisions

With other ships not showing lights

You might have forgiven this folly

But you did not and this fuelled my hatred

For these crimes I was condemned

To a lonely lighthouse within sight of land

Thirty-six years have passed since my arrival

Yet I still see the Roman legions pass my extinguished light

These brave men are doomed to die

In the dry marshlands and irrigated deserts

That are so cleverly hidden without thought

By the white cliffs and frozen guano mounds

If I was ever going to say a prayer

I would salute these great collectors of lavender stamps
