My Neighbour from Israel

Although we live in a large detached house

With an extensive summer garden

I have noticed that Rachel

Sits under her cherry tree on fine days

And chats to the low wooden fence

That separates her garden from the railway

She is a beautiful Jewess with raven eyes and raven hair

And like me writes poetry but only in Hebrew

This is a language that I struggle with frequently

I have given her a book of my poetry which was happily received

In return she has given Mary a portrait of her husband Joseph

Which is rich in its detail and shows the low fence

To its greatest advantage under the deep lime trees
