The Engadine (An Inspector Crome Mystery)

Dearest Martha

Ille terrarum mihi praeter omnes angulus redit is written on the stable door at Silvaplana. Many people miss it but I did not. I think it sums this beautiful area up, everything seems to be of a classical culture and all the better for it.

I arrived yesterday and immediately began exploring. The scenery cannot really be called dramatic especially when you have visited other areas of the country but it is quite individual especially about the high-lying broad –stretched valley which faces me when I look up from this postcard.

I can see a mountain in the distance but I do not know its name, but I will find out. The sweater that you gave me is useful already as it is jolly cold here.

I entered the Engadine by the tunnel under the Albula. What a bold engineering feat that was. I think it surpasses even the most outstanding engineering we have at home.

As you can see I am fast running out of room on this tiny card. I look forward to seeing you and Kitty again.

I will write again tomorrow

“Well gentleman that is it Miss Gentleman was not seen after the 28th June 1924. Not even a footprint. The local bobbies have scoured the area from top to bottom and not a trace, this young lady I am afraid has vanished into thin air”

“What about this Martha, does she check out sarge?”

“Well apart from being in Croydon at the time of the disappearance, she is as clean as a vicar’s sermon”

What about Kitty, she mentions her in the postcard?”

“That was Miss Gentleman’s cat Phillips. I think we can safely cross Kitty off of the list of suspects”

“Have we any suspect’s sarge?”

“So who’s up for a trip to The Engadine lads, the super has asked that two of you accompany me. It would be useful if one of you at least speaks some of the lingo”

“Why is the super so interested in this case, is over sixty years since she first disappeared?”

“Politician’s daughter Laithwaite, it appears that she gets the special treatment”
