Living Apart

Broad Hinton and Annie were taking tea on the open pier

“I feel that we will be buried apart” Hinton said staring out to sea

“Why do you think that?”

Hinton did not immediately answer and because of the vacuum created Annie did not pursue her question

As the temperatures were dropping rapidly a pink mist was beginning to form over the sea which in turn gave the town a light blue hue

Both Hinton and Annie were admiring the changing colours of the day

“I feel that I will go to war and will be cut down by a snipers bullet and will be buried without ceremony in the country of my death”

“But we are not at war; we have not been at war for generations”

“And many years after my death you too will be laid to rest many thousands of miles away from me”

“Then I would not let you go to war”

“War is inevitable we have been at peace for too long”

“The sky is showing its anger at you”

In the distance the orange sun dipped below the seafront buildings occasionally sending shafts of brilliant light across the sea

As this was happening Annie pulled a lever to her left and the pier slowly broke in two and drifted away from the coastal town

“You see my love there will never be an occasion for you to go to war”  she said without bitterness
