The War Poetry of Oswald Berring

Enfield in Love

He sits there smiling

But his bloodied teeth

Tell all who pass

That he was betrayed

By his first kiss

Lucy Brings a Lamp

I want to see your face Lucy

And know

That when my nightmares cease

Your love will cover me

The Hideous Church

Twenty years ago I might have worshipped

At the church that now burns in front of me

I would have sat with my French cousins

Blessed in white and looked forward

To our later walks in these fields

Where I now hide bloodied and fearing for my life

After this war ends the church will be rebuilt

And I might visit it again

With my French cousins

Dressed in white

But not for now

For today it burns and has no history
