Forty years ago whilst cycling in the northern counties I noticed a fly sunning itself on the lid of my juice bottle

I took a photograph of the tiny creature

Yesterday I saw another fly hiding in a dog-rose

I took a photograph of the tiny creature

And wondered if it was distantly related to my northern fly
