In Greek mythology Cassiopeia the mother of Andromeda boasted that her lovely daughter was more beautiful that the Nereids

To punish her for her arrogance Poseidon sent a sea monster to ravage the coast of Aethiopia

Andromeda was later chained naked to a rock as a sacrifice to the sea monster but is saved by the returning Perseus who slays the sea monster
