Emily Dickinson and I shared a bath
In the middle of her Amherst garden
We discussed
Water displacement
The spring petals in the trees
And the likelihood of the said petals
Dropping into our shared bath
Or directly on to our breasts
The scandal that we might cause in Massachusetts
By being naked in a private but very public garden
And the idea that smallpox covered blankets
Might be an alternative to nuclear weapons
