West Country Tales

Dry Chameleon

On a street in Bristol

I met a woman

With a dry chameleon

In her pocket

It had not rained that day

Taken Away by Carl

In Exeter I met a man named Carl

He removed the flowers

From my summer fields

And the clouds

From the warm skies

I was left destitute at the railway station

With no-one to care for me

Dartmouth Ferry

I have travelled on the ferry

For forty-three years

One day I will step ashore

Reculver Towers

On the beach at Paignton

My wife told me the story

Of the Reculver Towers

Which could be seen

Just to the left of the pier

On clear days

Kingswear Souvenir

On the occasion

Of the Queen Mothers ninetieth birthday

I purchased a mug

Celebrating her hundredth year

Devon Soil

As an experiment

My grandfather dyed

The county soil red

Whilst this was a success

It proved to be an unsuccessful venture

Eclipse

On the 11th of August 1999

A total eclipse of the sun

Was witnessed by thousands

In the West Country

My cactus died that day

The Tetbury Baker

A Tetbury baker

Once baked

Four hundred loaves

And ate them in one sitting

He is buried in the local churchyard

Without comment
