An Avebury Wedding

Pink roses are tied

With cream coloured ribbons

To the dark wooden pews

Everything is ready

As the procession enters the church

The bride splendid in her wedding dress

Stands under the white glass window

And looks at her father

“Christ awaits you at the altar” I whisper

She casts me a momentary smile as she passes

Behind the rood screen

I see her kneeling deep in prayer

Partially hidden by a blue display of flowers

Quiet words break the sanctuary of peace

And all is still apart from the sunlight

That dances merrily in the shadows

Soon the oak framed bells

Ring their greeting

And she emerges

Standing with pride under the clock tower

Where Isabella still keeps time

As she has always done
