Letter to Margot (Extract)

As you are aware my favourite aunt is mortally ill and I feel that she will not last the week which is incredibly sad taking into account the full life she has led.

I am at present travelling towards her cottage in Atworth to be at her side. Lucy sent a telegram to Richard when we stopped in Bath which he would have received by now.

As I travel along these bleak grey roads I have noticed that here in Wiltshire black shadows exist in even in the most shallow of rivers.

For the last hour or so I have thought of the poor creatures that hide in that transient tormented darkness.
