The Poet Robert Southey

Once visited Deal in the County of Kent

He did not write these lines

Which were found in a small brown box

At his lodging house

Soon after his departure

The dreamlands did not detain us whilst at sea
for a seagull took the ships cat in its beak
and flew up into the sky

Both creatures were felled by a flaming arrow
fired from the quarterdeck

It halted their passage brutally

Their remains burned brightly
for a while on the surface of the sea
but soon sank without ceremony
