On the occasions that I travel to London from Deal

I always film the River Medway from a high railway bridge

But I was unable to do so yesterday as a fog had obscured my view and I could not even see the heavy waters of the river

When I had left Deal the sun was bright in the sky shy but my train soon ran into thick mists and later the grey fog

As the train passed through Ashford thronged with its expectant shoppers the skies deepened and this obscurity accompanied me fully on my journey towards London

The spires of St Pancras were almost hidden in the life low cloud and the city although busy was strangely quiet

People appeared and people faded

They were all strangers to me

Nobody spoke

When I arrived home I found the Berkshire air bitter

Its clouds had iced

Darkness had not yet fallen

But the day had grown ground tired and would not respond
