When I was at school one of my greatest friends was a boy called Phillip                                                                                                    He later became an eye specialist but committed suicide at the age of forty two                                                                                  I was not aware of his suicide for many years until I met his wife by chance in Tierra del Fuego                                                                                                                              She had remarried but told me that she was unhappy and that was the reason that she had travelled to the edge of the world                                                                                  We spent two days together discussing old times and she insisted on accompanying me to the capital city by train                                                                                                        My sight was fading and I had an operation scheduled at the main hospital                                                                                                    Alice said that she would be in Tierra del Fuego to meet me when I returned but I never saw her again and I often linger at the railway station expecting to meet her
