Borrowed Pasture


Exiled from your homeland

You have farmed

This derelict land

For twelve winters

It is unlikely that you will return

To the country of your birth

And you know

That you will fade

Without protest

Into these unforgiving hills

Two Polish soldiers who were exiled after serving in the Second World War found refuge in rural Wales in the years after the conflict

They chanced upon a derelict hillside farm which had not been worked for twenty years and have tried to scrape a living from its hostile land without much success

Their plight was the subject of a BBC documentary in 1960
