After completing my shopping

I decided cushions and all

To walk to Sandwich Bay

Where the 2021 Open

Was being held

It was the last practice day

Before the main event

Sandwich Bay

In all its grey and white wildness

Seemed quieter than I expected to be

I watched nameless golfers

As they practiced in windy conditions

And then I left and walked

Towards to small town of Sandwich

I passed numerous car parks

And saw more park and ride buses

Than I had ever seen in one day

Eventually I reached the railway station

Where I found a Pearl S Buck first edition

On the crowded charity shelf

It was called God’s Men and dated from 1951

And I could not help wondering

Where it had been for the last seventy years

I had not discounted the railway station

Although I thought this extreme

And then my electric train arrived
