On Tuesday we travelled along three desert roads
The first was pretty straight and ran through
what I considered to be a quite repetitive terrain
The second road was surrounded by low hills
It was there that we picked up a hitchhiker called Barbara
Denis lectured her on the dangers of accepting rides in the desert
but I am not sure that it sank in as she seemed to be a refugee from the seventies
When we reached Cabin I arranged for a friend to take her onwards to her destination
Kitty gave her two hundred dollars and I gave her one of our tour jackets
We are still on the third desert road which is by far the most interesting
As it is frequently covered by thin layers of sand which obscure the road markings
The desert itself is starkly beautiful but strangely is the most populated
It feels like we are near a big city although we are only halfway through our journey
