Gas Pumps Ibiza

My late father owned a small garage

Which had two gas pumps

On its dusty forecourt

One was green and red

The other was red and green

These pumps were in place

From 1962 to 1975

When they were removed

During modernisation

These redundant pumps

Were then dumped into a cornfield

Behind my fathers garage

Where they rusted for many years

When I was young I used to read

All kinds of travel books

Whilst sitting on these pumps

I also read poetry from Ibiza

And planned to visit the island

Where I now live with Karin

My German wife of ten years

In 1998 the garage was swept away

When the road that it served was widened

The cornfield of my childhood dreams

Is now covered by a fast food drive through

I still think of it with Karin in my arms

In the hour before we start our day

And wonder what became of the gas pumps
