The Strange Career of Bill Lee Nom-Ates

Bill Lee was one of those footballers who passed under the radar for most of his career

He played mainly for one club but towards the end of his career he drifted around a variety of football clubs

At the start of his career he could be found as a goalkeeper as he was just over six foot tall and is remembered as a spectacular goalkeeper who was capable of making astonishing saves

However there were flaws to his play as he tended to stay on his line and left all but the obvious crosses to his defenders

However as goalkeeping evolved and the sweeper keeper became popular Bill Lee was found out and found that his style of keeping was all but redundant

But Bill Lee had another option as he was a capable striker and when playing up front scored his fair share of goals

He once scored four goals in a game and then followed it up a few weeks later with another four goals both against strong opposition

Thirteen goals in seven games and September had not run its course but any chance of increasing this impressive total were ruined when Bill Lee suffered a serious training injury

He did not play again to March but his goals had dried up and he was often to be found as a substitute

This continued for nearly a season until George Cousins the new manager saw something in Bill Lee that nobody else had spotted

Strangely enough it was after Bill Lee had been sent off for a particularly gruesome foul which saw him banned for eight matches

George converted Bill Lee to a full back not so much on his favoured right foot but mainly on the left

It was here that Bill Lee found his groove and he played there for a number of seasons

This said he was often in trouble with the authorities due to his physical style of play and collected red and yellow cards frequently

Due to his appearance he soon was given the nickname Animal which persists to this day

But it was not all physical as when on the ball Bill Lee was very elegant and his passing was normally without fault

He put this down to playing on his left foot which for some reason he said gave him thinking time

Bill Lee was also very effective when sweeping up behind his centre backs as having once been a goalkeeper he was aware of the disciplines required

When George left the club Bill Lee also left in protest and retired soon afterwards stating that he was unhappy with the direction that football was going

He stated that football was once a mans game played by real men but had been diluted by those who did not understand the game

The rules had become confusing and referees no longer ran game with any common sense

Full Backs were now expected to play like wingers and abandon their primary duties

It was not the game he knew so he just walked away at the end of his final contract

Bill Lee now lives in Cornwall with his wife Jane where he owns a gallery that showcases local artists

Occasionally he is seen at football matches often with George and has played in the occasional charity match as he has retained his fitness due as he notes to the savage Cornish hills

Bill Lee Nom-Ates to my calculations played in over one thousand games and scored eighty-six goals

He was sent off on fourteen separate occasions

He was never capped for his country as he was openly critical of the manager who he did not think was up to standard

Bill Lee was once suspended along with George for walking out of a disciplinary hearing as he considered that he was being punished unfairly

He was suspended for twelve weeks because of this and gave his full salary to charity during that period and suggested that the authorities match him

George resigned from their club at the end of the season as he did not think that they had supported them during this troublesome period

He was once asked to write a book about himself but declined as he thought nobody would be interested in him

But what is not widely known is that Bill Lee does indeed write but always uses his pen name Stuart Miller Osborne
