The Carlisle Haunting

In 1879 a workman who was engaged in roof repairs

Fell on to the platform below and died instantly

And soon after a haunting was reported on Platform 8

This has occurred at irregular intervals since then

And although exaggerated there are still reports

Of the lights on the station flickering repetitively for no apparent reason

Which brings me to my own rather frightening experience

That occurred on the station shortly before my ninth birthday

I had been waiting for a delayed train with my grandparents

When my grandfather announced that he was going to the buffet

And would I look after my grandmother who was sleepy

This I did and within minutes she was dozing on the seat

I thought little of this until I noticed a man standing only yards away

Staring at the roof and for some reason I thought him odd

He although I could not reason why seemed to be white shimmering

It was then that I noticed that the station lights were acting in a strange fashion

As if a switch was being tampered with by a naughty child

I soon became aware that the shimmering man was no longer on the platform

And the station lights had returned to normal without cause

I did not tell my grandparents as I thought that they might think me foolish

But in the years since I believe that I saw a ghost that evening

And that the white shimmering and the station lights

Were somehow connected as if power was being drained from the local grid

Which enabled the apparition to gain its irregular form
