The Bedford Road Haunting

This will be only a short account

Because not much actually happened

In the July of 1959 my father and I were driving back

From my aunt’s house in North Bedford

As she had suffered an unlucky accident

We were on the Bedford Road

Which ran between Stoke and Bedford

It was a straight stretch of road unlit at night

Our radio was tuned in to a jazz station

And both our windows were open

As it was a warm night

The illuminated clock in the car

Noted that it was past midnight

It was then I saw a train heading towards us

Travelling across the pitch black fields

It passed across the road about

Two hundred yards in front of us

And then disappeared towards the river on our right

I expected my father to comment on this odd sight

But he carried on driving as if he had not seen a thing

When I asked him about what I had seen

He told me that I had been dreaming

But I assured him that I had been awake

The whole thing disturbed me greatly

But I soon began to think that I had been dreaming

As trains do not cross wheat fields and roads

And the nearest railway was over ten miles away in Bedford

Whether I was dreaming or actually saw the train

Has haunted me even since

As I have never really made any sense of it
