The Braintree Incident

On the evening of the 23rd of October 1958

At Braintree Station in Essex

A very alarming event

Was overheard on the loudspeakers

A woman’s scream

Stop it Jack you are hurting me

Then another scream

And then the sound of somebody falling on to a wooden floor

The strange thing is that despite extensive police enquiries

No evidence of a violent crime

In the vicinity of either the station

Or within the immediate area

Was ever uncovered

The story in time faded from view

That was until June 1999

When strange sounds were heard coming from Alcock Terrace

Which was a row of Victorian Railway Cottages

This was again investigated but nothing was found

And as before the story faded from view

But it was brought screaming to the surface

On the afternoon of the 9th of July 2021

When during the demolition of Alcock Terrace

A skeleton was found buried in the cellar of number six

It was later confirmed that this was the skeleton of Muriel Tapper

Who had disappeared from her home in Witham in 1956

On further examination it was found that the victim

Had died from a severe blow to the back of her head

Her husband Jack Tapper who was a person of interest

Had emigrated to Australia in 1959 and was last heard of in 1970

Police investigations soon stalled due to this and the amount of time

That had elapsed since the murder

And the case was shelved as unsolved earlier this year

No reasonable explanation has ever been presented as to why

The loudspeakers picked up Muriel Tapper’s last moments

On that chilly October evening in 1958

This remains a mystery
