Lodge Park (fragment)

Pappy was annoyed at Richard as he had promised to be at Lodge Park by seven but had called her to say that he was still in Poole

She placed an importance of her mini breaks with her husband as they were periods of calm in their busy lives

It has been over five years since her breakdown and whilst she felt strong she wondered if that was only a mask

The Rifkins were a middle aged couple who owned the park and she considered them friends

But of late they seemed to be taking a great interest in the spare area that was opposite their mobile home

She wondered if Erik was watching her but put this down to her overactive imagination which because of her collision was unreliable

Lucy was a happy soul who even if everything caved in around them would still find an excuse to smile

Pappy watched them as they cleared some of the winter waste with a good humour

They also seemed to be measuring everything in a very detailed way

The spare area had a tragic history as fifteen years previously a young couple had perished in a fire which had been started by a careless cigarette

For sometime after that it was used as a general dumping area until Erik decided that there was space for two of the smaller caravans

He did not take the tragedy lightly as he had erected a small memorial near the main gates

Lodge Park had something of a chequered history as after being opened in 1932 it was the scene of a double suicide

Pappy had tried to find out more about the tragedy but apart from finding out that the victims had lived in Wimbledon she found little else

It was even said that the double tragedy has not occurred in Lodge Park at all but at the Butter Valley Park some miles away

Erik said that the couple had stayed at Lodge Park previously and that the local paper had made an error at the time

During the war the park was taken over by the RAF due to its closeness to Scampton

This occupation had caused considerable damage and the park was not reopened until 1949 when Lucy’s grandfather purchased the site

That if one discounts the tragic fire was as about as exciting as it got for Lodge Park although it was used by some of the better known sixties pop groups before they hit the big time

Really more for fun Erik had framed a pale blue sock and told all who were interested that it had once belonged to one of the Beatles

In an effort to make the area softer during the building work Erik and Lucy had hung coloured light bulbs from the nearby trees

This faintly irritated Pappy as they shone into their home and at night and created dancing patterns on the walls which slightly unnerved her
