The Lover

I was standing quite naked on my balcony

A ship was drifting out of the harbour

I wondered if any of the crew had seen me

Annie of the Blue Ridge Apartments

Smoking a cigarette and enjoying the sun

A car drew up in front of the apartments

Sabine looked up and gave me a shallow wave

My lover had arrived in her maroon suit

I knew that she was still angry with me

There was a knock at the door

How did you know that it was me

I saw your car in my parking space

She slapped my face

I slapped her face a little harder

And then kissed my lover

Smudging her lipstick

It seemed to undress her

Even though I was naked

And she was dressed

I celebrated my victory

By pouring Sabine a gin

And then returned to the balcony

Where I arranged our wicker chairs
